Excerpt: Stralsund – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia In medieval ages, the Stralsund area was part of the West Slavic Principality of Rügen, which was part of the Kingdom of Denmark since 1168. At that time, the Dänholm isle and a small fishing village, both at the site of the latter city, were named Strale / Stralow, meaning “arrow” (this meaning is still preserved in the town’s coat of arms, showing an arrow). In the course of German Ostsiedlung, many German settlers, gentry and merchants were called into the principality, and eventually populated the Strale site. Merchants from other countries as well as locals were attracted to the settlement and made up for one third of the city’s population. The Danish navy was using the isle as well. When the settlement had grown to town size, prince Wizlaw I of Rügen granted Lübeck law to “our town Stralow” in 1234. In 1240, when the prince gave additional land to the city, he called it Stralesund. The success of the settlement challenged the powerful Free City of Lübeck, which burnt Stralsund down in 1249. Afterwards the town was rebuilt with a massive city wall having 11 town gates and 30 watchtowers. The Neustadt, a town-like suburb, was merged to Stralsund by 1361. Schadegard, a twin town to Stralsund also founded by Wizlaw I nearby, but was not granted German law, served as the principal stronghold and enclosed a fort. It was given up and torn down by 1269 under the pressure of the Stralsund Bürger. In 1293 Stralsund became a member of the Hanseatic League. A total of 300 ships flying the flag of Stralsund cruised the Baltic Sea in the 14th century. In 1325, the Principality of Rügen became part of the Duchy of Pomerania, Stralsund however maintained a considerable independence. In the 17th century, |

It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is famous for its vast size and unique architecture. Its construction began in 1221, following French Gothic parameters. It had very important modifications in the 15th and 16th centuries (spires of the principal façade, Chapel of the Constable, cimborio of the transept: these elements of advanced Gothic give the cathedral its distinguished profile). The last works of importance (the sacristy or the Chapel of Saint Thecla ) occurred during the 18th century, the century in which the Gothic statuary of the doors of the principal façade was also transformed. At the beginning of the 20th century, some semidetached construction to the cathedral was eliminated, such as the Archepiscopal Palace and the upper floor of the cloister. The style of the cathedral is Gothic , although it has inside some Renaissance and Baroque decorations. In the cathedral, works of extraordinary artists are kept, such as the architects and sculptors of the Colonia family (Juan , Simón and Francisco), the sculptors Gil de |

Excerpt: David is a life-size marble sculpture by Gian Lorenzo Bernini . The sculpture was part of a commission to decorate the villa of Bernini’s patron Cardinal Scipione Borghese the Galleria Borghese where it still resides. It was completed in the course of seven months from 1623 to 1624.The subject of the work is the biblical David , about to throw the stone that will bring down Goliath , which will allow David to behead him. Relating to earlier works on the same theme, it is also revolutionary in its implied movement and its psychological depth. Background Between 1618 and 1625 Bernini was commissioned to decorate with sculptures the villa of his patron, Cardinal Scipione Borghese . In 1623 only yet 24 years old he was working on the sculpture of Apollo and Daphne , when for some reason he abandoned this project to start work on the David . According to records of payment, Bernini had started on the sculpture by mid1623, while his contemporary biographer, Filippo Baldinucci , states that he finished it in seven months. David was the last commission Bernini could take for Borghese. Even before it was finished, his friend and protector Maffeo Barberini was elected pope, as Pope Urban VIII . This would lead to several large-scale architectural projects for Bernini, particularly in connection with the St. Peter’s Basilica , and for several months even the Apollo and Daphne was left unfinished. Depiction of Bernini’s David in a detail from Giovanni Paolo Pannini ‘s Picture gallery with views of modern Rome (1759)Subject matter The sculpture shows a scene from the Old Testament First Book of Samuel . The Israelites are at war with the Philistines , whose giant warrior Goliath has challenged any of the Israeli soldiers to settle the conflict by single combat . The young shepherd David |

Excerpt: Hanuman Temple, Connaught Place – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Crescent Moon on the spire of the templeHistorically, Delhi located on the banks of the Yamuna River has been stated to be the Indraprastha city built by Pandavas of the Mahabharata epic period. In the Mahabharata days, Pandavas ruled from Indraprastha and Kauravas from Hastinapur (two collateral families) as per a brokered partition of the Kuru empire. But, in a dice game, Pandavas lost their Kingdom and were exiled for a 12 year term and in the 13th year must remain in hiding (with a rider that if they were detected during this period they would undergo the exile denovo). Mythological legend states that during the Pandavas’ exile (imposed by their cousin Duryodhana of the Kaurava dynasty), in order to subdue Bhimas (second of the five Pandava brothers) arrogance, Hanuman considered to be the brother of Bhima (both Vayu’s children, appeared in the forest disguised as a weak and aged monkey. Bhima, while in search of a fragrant flower sought by Draupadi in the forest, found Hanuman lying with his tail blocking his way and, unaware of Hanumans identity, scornfully asked him to remove his tail. But Hanuman told Bhima to lift the tail since being old he was unable to do it on his own. Bhima tried hard several times but failed to lift it, in spite of being a man of great strength. Bhima then realized that the monkey was none other his own brother, apologizes for his arrogant behavior and requests Hanuman to show him his true form. Hanuman was then said to have enlarged himself and showed Bhima the size in which he had crossed the sea to go to Lanka, looking for Sita during the Ramayana epic period. After the Pandavas won the Kurukshetra war against the Kauravas and reestablished … More: |

It is associated with 45 Nobel laureates. The university has a sound international reputation and was ranked 4th in Germany, 29th in Europe and 90th in the world in 2009 by the Academic Ranking of World Universities. Göttingen in 1735 King George II, founder and president of the universityIn 1734, King George II of Great Britain, and the Elector of Hanover, gave his Prime Minister, Gerlach Adolph von Münchhausen, the order to establish a university in Göttingen to propagate the ideas of academic freedom and enlightenment at the times of the European Enlightenment. Throughout the 18 century the University of Göttingen was in the top rank of German universities for its free spirit and atmosphere of scientific exploration and research. By 1812, Göttingen had become an internationally acknowledged modern university with its library of more than 250,000 volumes. Wissembourg is a sub-prefecture of the department. The name Wissembourg is merely a Gallicized version of Weißenburg (Weissenburg) in German meaning, “white castle”.History Town hallSalt house (Maison du sel )The Benedictine abbey around which the town has grown was founded in the 7th century, perhaps under the patronage of Dagobert I . The abbey was supported by vast territories. Of the 11th century buildings constructed under the direction of Abbot Samuel, only the Schartenturm and some moats remain. The town was fortified in the 13th century. The abbey church of Saint-Pierre et Paul , erected in the same century under the direction of Abbot Edelin was secularized in the French Revolution and despoiled of its treasures; in 1803 it became the parish church, resulting in the largest parish church of Alsace, only exceeded in size by the cathedral of Strasbourg. At the Abbey in the late 9th century, the monk Otfried composed a gospel harmony , the first substantial work of verse in German .In 1354 Charles IV made it one of the grouping of ten towns called the Decapolis that survived annexation by France under Louis XIV in 1678 and was extinguished with the French Revolution . On 25 January 1677 a great fire destroyed many houses and the Hôtel de Ville; its replacement dates from 174152. |

Excerpt: Texas () is the second-largest U.S. state by both area and population, and the largest state in the contiguous United States. The name, meaning “friends” or “allies” in Caddo, was applied by the Spanish to the Caddo themselves and to the region of their settlement in East Texas. Located in the South Central United States, Texas is bordered by Mexico to the south, New Mexico to the west, Oklahoma to the north, Arkansas to the northeast, and Louisiana to the east. Texas has an area of 268,820 square miles (696,200 km), and a growing population of 24.7 million residents. Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth-largest in the United States, while San Antonio is the second largest in the state and seventh largest in the United States. DallasFort Worth and Greater Houston are the fourth and sixth largest United States metropolitan areas, respectively. Other major cities include Dallas, El Paso, and Austinthe state capital. Texas is nicknamed the Lone Star State to signify Texas as an independent republic and as a reminder of the state’s struggle for independence from Mexico. The “Lone Star” can be found on the Texas State Flag and on the Texas State Seal today. Due to its size and geologic features such as the Balcones Fault, Texas contains diverse landscapes that resemble both the American South and Southwest. Although Texas is popularly associated with the Southwestern deserts, less than 10% of the land area is desert. Most of the population centers are located in areas of former prairies, grasslands, forests, and the coastline. Traveling from east to west, one can observe terrain that ranges from coastal swamps and piney woods, to rolling plains and rugged hills, and finally the desert and mountains of the Big Bend. 1850s Ships $36.19 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Marco Polo was a 3-masted wooden clipper ship, launched in 1851 at Saint John, New Brunswick. She was named after Venetian explorer Marco Polo. She measured 184 feet in length, with a beam of 36 feet and draught of 29 feet. She displaced 1625 tons and had 3 decks. At her launch on April 17 at the shipyard of James Smith, located at the mouth of Marsh Creek on Courtney Bay, the Marco Polo’s keel struck the mudflat and the vessel fell on its side, injuring several workers. She was floated free by April 22, apparently suffering little damage, however due to her large size, she subsequently grounded in Marsh Creek where she lay for 2 weeks before again being floated free. It is speculated that during one or both of these incidents, the vessel’s keel was affected, which may have led to her subsequent speed records. In the summer of 1851 the Marco Polo sailed from Saint John to Liverpool, England with a cargo of timber, making the crossing in 15 days. In 1852, the ship was purchased by the Black Ball Line and converted for passenger service between England and Australia. That year the Marco Polo sailed from Liverpool to Port Phillip, Australia in 76 days. After spending 3 weeks in port, she returned to Liverpool in another 76 days. Her total trip time was 5 months, 21 days, making this the first recorded round trip in less than 6 months. It has been asserted that One in every twenty Australians can trace his or her roots to the Marco Polo. “1861 March 7, Collided with an iceberg South of Cape Horn and arrived in Valparaiso leaking badly on May 2. After repairs she continued to Liverpool on May 22 where she arrived 183 days out from Melbourne.” “1858 August, Saved the passengers and crew of the emmigrant ship Eastern City which had burnt at sea… More: |

The groove usually starts near the periphery and ends near the centre of the disc. Phonograph records are generally described by their size (“12-inch”, “10-inch”, “7-inch”, etc.), the rotational speed at which they are played (“33 r.p.m.”, “45″, “78″, etc.), their time capacity (“Long Playing”), their reproductive accuracy, or “fidelity”, or the number of channels of audio provided (“Mono”, “Stereo”, “Quadraphonic”, etc.). Gramophone records were the primary medium used for commercial music reproduction for most of the 20th century, replacing the phonograph cylinder, with which they had co-existed, by the 1920s. 1910s In Greece $21.18 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The participation of Greece in the Balkan Wars of 19121913 is one of the most important episodes in modern Greek history, as it allowed the Greek state to almost double its size and achieve most of its present territorial size. It also served as a catalyst of political developments, as it brought to prominence two personalities, whose relationship would dominate the next decade and have long-lasting repercussions for Greece: the Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos, and the Army’s commander-in-chief, the Crown Prince and later King, Constantine I. In the First Balkan War, Greece was allied with Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro in the “Balkan League” against the Ottoman Empire. The war began on 8 October 1912 with the declaration of war by Montenegro, while Greece, Bulgaria and Serbia joined on 17 October 1912. During this war, Greece fought on two fronts on land, and also shouldered the main naval effort of the Balkan allies. The initial principal thrust on land was by the Army of Thessaly, which succeeded in occupying much of Macedonia, including the strategically important port of Thessaloniki, the latter just hours ahead of a Bulgarian division; this would result in increased tension between the two allies in the coming months, and would be one of the causes of the Second Balkan War. Following the successful conclusion of operations in Macedonia, the Greek Army shifted its weight to the Epirus front, where, after a prolonged siege, the city of Ioannina fell, and the Greeks advanced into “Northern Epirus” (modern southern Albania). In the Aegean Sea, the Greek Navy took possession of all the Aegean islands except for the Italian-occupied Dodecanese, and fought off two attempts by the Ottoman Navy to sally forth from the Dardanelles. Excerpt: The Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler (LSSAH) was Adolf Hitler’s personal Bodyguard Regiment (“Leibstandarte” being a somewhat archaic German expression for the personal bodyguard of a military leader). The LSSAH independently participated in combat during the Invasion of Poland. The LSSAH was amalgamated into the Waffen-SS together with the SS-VT and the combat units of the SS-TV prior to Operation Barbarossa in 1941. By the end of World War II it had been increased in size from a regiment to a Panzer division. The elite division was a component of the Waffen-SS which was found guilty of war crimes in the Nuremberg Trials. In the earliest days of the NSDAP, it was realized by the leaders that bodyguard units composed of trustworthy and loyal men would be a wise development. Ernst Röhm formed a guard formation from the 19.Granatwerfer-Kompanie, and from this formation the Sturmabteilung (SA) soon evolved. Excerpt: Pentemili is the name of the beach of northern Cyprus where the Turkish troops landed on 20 July 1974. It is located 5 miles (8 km) west of Kyrenia , thus the name. The area where the fighting took place is now more commonly referred to as “ESCAPE BEACH”. For 3 days (20-22 July 1974), heavy fighting took place around the beachhead of Pentemili, between Turkish and Greek Cypriot forces.20th July The landing MonumentsThe Turkish task force set sail from Mersin port at 11.30 on 19th of July. At first, at about 05.00 of the 20th of July the fleet reached the northern coast of Cyprus. It initially missed the designated beach of Pentemili, and approached the unsuitable rocky beach of Glykiotissa, 3 km west of Kyrenia . The planned time for the beginning of the disembarkation was 05.30, but because of this mistake, the landing of the first crafts took place at 07.15. The landing finished at about 13.00.The landed forces were one infantry (marine) brigade, namely the “Cakmak” brigade with 4 battalions and 12 M101 howitzers (105mm calibre) and some M113 . The Cakmak brigade consisted of the 50th infantry regiment (3 battalions) and the amphibious regiment (the 1st battalion of which participated in the landing), with a nominal strength of 3,500 men (4 battalions), 12 guns, 15 M47 MBTs and 20 M113 APC . The M47 , on the decks of the LST Ertugrul (L401), were unable to disembark, as the small size of the beach didn’t allow Ertugrul to approach. One unit of company size was also transported with helicopters to the hills south of the road. A total of roughly 3,000 men was unloaded in the Pentemili beachhead that day.The landing occurred under no fire, as |

Excerpt: Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives , 2-10-0 represents the wheel arrangement of two leading wheels on one axle (usually in a leading truck ), ten powered and coupled driving wheels on five axles, and no trailing wheels . This arrangement was often named Decapod , especially in the United States , although this name was sometimes applied to locomotives of 0-10-0 “Ten-Coupled” arrangement.Other equivalent classifications are:These locomotives were popular in Europe , particularly in Germany , and in Russia ; British use of the type was confined to the period during and after World War II . In the United States , the 2-10-0 was not popular but was a favorite of a small number of railroads, mostly in mountainous terrain. The 2-10-0′s main advantage was that five out of six of its axles were powered, meaning almost all the weight was available for traction rather than being distributed over pilot and trailing wheels. The long rigid wheelbase caused problems on tightly curved track, so blind drivers were the norm, either on the central axle, and/or on the second and/or fourth axles. Often lateral motion devices were attached to the leading drive axle. The wheel arrangement’s disadvantages included the firebox size restriction caused by the lack of trailing wheel. This meant the firebox was fitted in between the wheels (common on earlier locomotives) and |

The CONSERT radar will perform a tomography of the nucleus by measuring electromagnetic wave propagation from the Philae lander and the Rosetta orbiter throughout the comet nucleus in order to determine its internal structures and to deduce information on its composition. The lander and orbiter electronics was provided by France and both antennas were constructed in Germany. The experiment was designed and built in France by Laboratoire de Planétologie de Grenoble (LPG) and by Service d’Aéronomie in Paris, in Germany by Max Planck Institut of Aeronomy (MPAE and now MPS) in Lindau/Katlenburg. The Principal Investigator of CONSERT is Dr. Wlodek Kofman (LPG), Director of Research at CNRS. Scientific objectives The scientific objectives of the CONSERT experiment are the determination of the main dielectric properties and, through modelling, to set constraints on the cometary composition (materials, porosity, etc.), to detect large size structures (several tens of meters) and stratification, to detect and characterise small scale irregularities |

Eugene Smith, David Lachapelle, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Garry Winogrand, Philippe Halsman, Lisette Model, Clarence John Laughlin, Peter Hujar. Excerpt: Ansel Easton Adams Ansel Easton Adams (February 20, 1902 April 22, 1984) was an American photographer and environmentalist , best known for his black-and-white photographs of the American West , especially in Yosemite National Park . One of his most famous photographs was Moon and Half Dome, Yosemite National Park, California. With Fred Archer, Adams developed the Zone System as a way to determine proper exposure and adjust the contrast of the final print. The resulting clarity and depth characterized his photographs and the work of those he taught the system. Adams primarily used large-format cameras, despite their size, weight, setup time, and film cost, because their high resolution helped ensure sharpness in his images. Adams founded the Group f/64 along with fellow photographers Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham , which in turn created the Museum of Modern Art ‘s department of photography. Adams’s timeless and visually stunning photographs are reproduced on calendars, posters, and in books, making his photographs widely recognizable. Life Childhood Adams was born in the Western Addition of San Francisco, California , to distinctly upper-class parents Charles Hitchcock Adams and Olive Bray Adams. He was an only child and was named after his uncle Ansel Easton. The Adams family came from New England, having migrated from the north of Ireland in the early 1700s. His grandfather founded and built a prosperous lumber business, which his father later ran, though his father s natural talents |

Excerpt: 19th century 20th century 21st century The 2000s decade in film involved many significant films. Thousands of full-length films have been produced during the first decade of the 21st Century. Building on developments in the 1990s, computers are used to create effects that would have previously been more expensive, from the subtle erasing of surrounding islands in Cast Away (leaving Tom Hanks’ character stranded with no other land in sight) to the spectacular battle scenes such as those in Gladiator, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The Matrix and 300. In addition, film genres not known for their popular appeal in North America became increasingly attractive to filmgoers: films in foreign languages like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Passion of the Christ and Letters from Iwo Jima; and documentary films like An Inconvenient Truth, March of the Penguins, Super Size Me, and Fahrenheit 9/11, became very successful. Also gaining popularity was the use of Computer-generated imagery (CGI) to produce films. These types of films were originally seen in the 1990s with the likes of Toy Story and its sequel Toy Story 2, but CGI films became more popular in 2001 with the release of Shrek. Other popular CGI films include Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Monsters Inc., Shrek 2, and Ratatouille. The 2000s also saw a resurgence of several genres. For example, Gladiator, Moulin Rouge!, and Spider-Man increased the popularity of the Epic, Musical, and comic book genres, respectively. The … More: |

Chapters: 4th-Century Bc Greek Sculptures, Aphrodite of Cnidus, Lady of Elche, Athena Giustiniani, Antikythera Ephebe, Tanagra Figurine, Lady of Guardamar, Lady of Baza. Excerpt: The Aphrodite of Cnidus was one of the most famous works of the ancient Greek sculptor Praxiteles of Athens (4th century BC). It and its copies are often referred to as the Venus Pudica (modest Venus) type, on account of her covering her groin with her right hand. Variants of the Venus Pudica (suggesting an action to cover the breasts) are the Venus de’ Medici or the Capitoline Venus. The Colonna VenusThe statue became famous for its beauty, meant to be appreciated from every angle, and for being the first life-size representation of the nude female form. It depicted the goddess Aphrodite as she prepared for the ritual bath that restored her purity (not virginity), discarding her drapery in her left hand, while modestly shielding her genitals with her right hand. At first glance it may appear where her hand is placed is a gesture of modesty, but in all actuality it only emphasizes her nudity. According to a possibly apocryphal account by Pliny, Praxiteles received a commission from the citizens of Kos for a statue of the goddess Aphrodite. Praxiteles then created two versionsone fully draped, and the other completely nude. The shocked citizens of Kos rejected the nude statue and purchased the draped version. The design and appearance of the draped version is today unknown as it didn’t survive, nor did it appear to have merited attention, to judge from the lack of surviving accounts. The rejected nude was purchased by some citizens of Knidos and set up in an open air temple that permitted viewing of the statue from all sides. It quickly became one of the most famous works by … More: |

79 Establishments; Manchester, Deva Victrix, Mamucium $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Manchester, Deva Victrix, Mamucium. Excerpt: Deva, rendered as it likely appeared Deva Victrix , or simply Deva , was a legionary fortress and town in the Roman province of Britannia . The settlement evolved into Chester , the county town of Cheshire , England . The fortress was built initially by the Legio II Adiutrix in the AD 70s as the Roman army advanced north against the Brigantes , but completed over the next few decades by the Legio XX Valeria Victrix . Several factors including the presence of an elliptical building unique in legionary fortresses, the method of construction, and the unusual size of the fortress 20 % larger than other Roman fortresses in Britain suggests that it may have been intended as the base for a potential invasion of Ireland, and perhaps eventually to become the capital of Britain. The fortress contained barracks, granaries, military headquarters, military baths, and an unusual elliptical building that may have acted as the governor of Britain’s headquarters. The fortress was rebuilt in stone at the end of the 1st century AD when it was occupied by the Legio XX Valeria Victrix , and again in the early 3rd century. The legion probably remained at the fortress until it eventually fell into disuse in the late 4th or early 5th century. A civilian settlement or canabae grew around the fortress and was one of the factors leading to the construction of an amphitheatre to the south east of the fortress. Chester Roman Amphitheatre could have seated between 8,000 and 10,000 people, the largest known military amphitheatre in Britain. The civilian settlement remained after the Romans departed, eventually becoming the present-day city of Chester. There were peripheral settlements around Roman Deva, including Broughton , the source of the garrison’s water |

Viewed from the area at the back of the houses in Newgate-street, the windows have a most imposing effect. It is built upon arches which form a noble cloister, and over the centre are recorded the names of the officers of the Institution under whose superintendence the building has been erected (see the Frontispiece). The inscription, which is surmounted by a bust of King Edward, is in the following words : ‘ This Hall, erected by public munificence, was opened for ‘ the use of the Children of Christ’s Hospital, on the 29th day i of May, 1829; The Right Honourable William Thompson, ‘ M.
